In this video interview, SEO expert Stoney deGeyter explains his approach to keyword research, not only for a few keywords, but for the hundreds of keyphrases needed to optimize, say, a large e-commerce site. The approach involves three main stages: finding and organizing core keywords, and then arranging a campaign with the qualifiers to those core keywords. First, find the core terms that are applicable to your site, that is, generic keyphrases with no qualifiers, such as “motorcycle battery.” Next, assign core keywords to the particular pages and sections to which they apply. Finally, for each core term, look for all the searched-for qualifiers, such as “honda motorcycle battery,” “dirt bike battery,” or a product name or number. Determine which qualifiers can be grouped together. Realize that some qualifiers, such as “cheap” and “vintage” are antithetic, and must not appear on the same page or sectional page. Stoney deGeyter is the president of Pole Position Marketing, a leading search engine optimization and marketing firm helping businesses grow since 1998. This video interview was taped on December 8, 2009 at Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago, IL.

AshtonWebb.com – As you know if you have been watching my previous video tutorials at www.AshtonWebb.com you know that I ONLY use the free keword sugestion tools like google adword external keyword tool or my favorite… the SEO Book keyword suggestion tool powered by WordTracker, I only use these as a “starting point”. When I actually want to find the actual traffic hits per day, what I do is go into my adwords account, and then place an ad on the keyword that I researched, then bid just enough to stay on the first page of google for that phrase I am testing. What that will do is tell me the actual impressions that my ad had per day, and that will tell me accurately how much traffic is going to that particular keyword i am bidding on. Using the related search phrase feature in googles search field is definately invaluable to find a whole new world of keywords to test that sometimes you would have never found using the free tools. So go ahead and try the related term feature and use it for yourself to find those valuable nuggets that google hides. For more free training go to my blog at: AshtonWebb.com – Ashton

This tutorial shows you how to find keywords that are less competitive but still have lots of searches, giving you a better chance to get on page one of Google search results. The example was for the golf niche. The tutorial uses the free Google keyword tool and also shows the power of Market Samurai software. The criteria for locating good keywords are: -the #1 site on page one search results gets at least 80 potential clicks per day -there are less than 30000 pages (we had to go higher in the golf niche) -analyze the top 10 sites on page one of Google. See how competitive they are based on their page rank, domain age, listing in directories, use of keywords in the title, URL, description tags and so on. Do this work up front!
