EU’s Kroes: Europe’s future depends on ICT innovation

From 27 to 29 September more than 100 information and communication technology research projects funded by the EU are being showcased at the ‘ICT 2010 Digital Driven’ conference and exhibition in Brussels Expo. The event, which is organised every two years by the European Commission and this year hosted by the Belgian rotating Presidency of the European Council, gathers researchers business and policy makers to show the ICT latest advances. The major themes of this year are research for sustainable growth in a low carbon economy, ICT’s constructive impact on everyday life and the importance of public funding and support in ICT research and innovation. Neelie Kroes, EC Vice President in charge of Digital Agenda and Prince Philippe of Belgium inaugurate the showcase. The occasion for the visitors to see ICT innovations and the imlplementation in the citizens’ daily life such as the ICub humanoid robot, the BeAware project or the robot Kompaï. iCub is a humanoid robot which resembles a 3-year-old which can see, hear and touch. With 53 motors to move its head and limbs, iCub can sit, crawl and pick up objects with its five-fingered hands. By watching, listening and touching the robot learns from its surroundings — just like a child would.
